What the rescue actually is
Acolyte is not bought or beaten in the ordinary sense. She is found: the route takes you out of the normal stage rotation into a pocket arena, ends in a boss called the Anima Harvester, and finishes with an act of giving rather than a kill. The character you hand a healing item to at the end of that arena is the character you unlock.
That shape is deliberate. The expansion frames Acolyte as its central idea in one body — taking more power at great cost — and the unlock asks you to spend something that keeps her alive instead of something that makes her hit harder.
Before you start
- Hallowed Concepts enabled. Without the expansion active the route does not exist, and Acolyte cannot be selected even if a friend in the lobby owns the content.
- The N’Tormat and at least one Page. This is the prerequisite people miss. The Curio is what the route is built around, and it arrives with a Page rather than on its own.
- A healing item in your inventory. Any rarity, and it needs to be a healing item rather than a survivability item. Carry it deliberately — the handover at the end is what completes the unlock.
- A build that can hold a boss wave. The route ends in a teleporter event followed by an arena fight that keeps producing bosses until the Harvester shows up. Attempting the route on a thin build wastes the run, not just the attempt.
The route, step by step
- 1
Enable Hallowed Concepts and start a run
Acolyte cannot be rescued without the expansion active. Enforcer is unlocked by default when it is, so Acolyte is the one survivor in this release that has to be earned.
- 2
Get the N’Tormat and at least one Page
This is the real gate. The Curio and a Page arrive together through the Trials of N’Kuhana or through a Wake event, and the route below assumes you are carrying both.
- 3
Reach the Bazaar Between Time
The Bazaar is the pocket realm the rescue route runs through. You can also arrive at the same objective by clearing a Wake event instead, though whether one appears is down to the run.
- 4
Find the gong and start a trial
Drop down into the pit inside the Bazaar. Ringing the gong opens the trial that hands over the Curio and its first Page.
- 5
Take the Shrine of Descent and clear the teleporter event
With the Curio in hand, the shrine opens the way to the arena. This teleporter event is the hardest fight on the route, so arrive with a build that can hold a boss plus its adds.
- 6
Carry a healing item into the arena
Any rarity works, but it has to be a genuine healing item rather than something adjacent to healing. Without one in your inventory the rescue cannot be completed.
- 7
Clear the boss wave until the Anima Harvester appears
Past the portal is a Ritual Portal that leads to a separate arena. Climb the ramp to the console, activate it, and fight through the boss wave it calls in until the Anima Harvester joins.
- 8
Beat the Anima Harvester and give the Acolyte your healing item
Once the Harvester falls, Acolyte is lying on the ground beside the exit portal. Hand her the healing item and she is unlocked as a playable survivor.
The step order reflects how the mechanic is described across the developer's material and the recorded rescue reports players have published. The framing is ours.
Where the attempt usually fails
Most of the published write-ups stop at the step list, which leaves the failure cases unspoken. There are three, and they are worth knowing before you commit a run.
| Failure | Why it happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving without a healing item | The handover is the unlock. No healing item means the arena can be cleared and still leave you without the survivor. | Treat it as a loadout decision, not a drop you hope for. Buying one deliberately early is cheaper than re-running the route. |
| Losing to the teleporter event | The shrine event is followed by a boss wave, so the run has to survive two escalating fights back to back. | Attempt the route once your build already answers the stage rather than because you want the character now. |
| Never finding the Curio in the first place | One route into the objective depends on a Wake event, and whether the run produces one is out of your hands. | Prefer the trial route through the Bazaar, which is a place you can deliberately travel to. |
Which healing items qualify
The requirement is about the category of item rather than its rarity, so the cheapest healing item in the game satisfies it. The ones players reach for first are the common crowd: a Medkit, a Cautious Slug or a Harvester's Scythe, each of which restores health directly and can be picked up long before the route becomes viable.
The mistake is substituting something that keeps you alive without restoring health. Damage reduction, barriers and shields all make a run safer and none of them completes the handover. The item browser lists every entry by rarity and type if you want to check a specific pickup before spending it.
What you get for it
Acolyte is a close-range glaive fighter built around spending her own health and reclaiming it. Her passive rewrites healing for her character: part of the health she loses is set aside to be reclaimed rather than being gone for good, and incoming healing is diverted into that same reserve instead of topping her up directly. That is why the unlock asks for a healing item — the mechanic and the price of admission are the same idea.
Her survivor page carries the loadout breakdown and the developer's own description of the kit, and the expansion overview covers what else ships alongside her.

The rescue route executed end to end, including the details written guides tend to skip
- Treats the healing item as a requirement settled before the attempt rather than something to find along the way.
- Notes that the handover consumes the item, which makes the rescue a sensible place to spend a cheap healing pickup.
- Warns that a revive-style item is not accepted — the requirement is a healing item specifically.
- Says the Shrine of Descent appears once the Curio and a Page are in hand, and that the trial route is the dependable way to get them.

The alternate loadout unlocks, which are separate challenges from the survivor rescue
- Covers both new survivors' alternate loadouts as their own challenges, distinct from unlocking the characters themselves.
- Recommends lowering the difficulty and enabling an artifact that lets you choose items deliberately before attempting them.
- Identifies the hard part as locating a specific boss-type enemy rather than executing the mechanic once you find it.
Frequently asked
- How do you unlock the Acolyte in Risk of Rain 2?
- Clear a boss wave in the Hallowed Concepts rescue arena and then hand the Acolyte a healing item. Getting there requires the expansion enabled, the N’Tormat Curio and at least one Page, and the Shrine of Descent to open the way.
- Which healing item do you need for the Acolyte?
- Any rarity qualifies, so the requirement is about the type of item rather than its tier. What matters is that it restores health directly — utility items that merely support survival are not a substitute.
- Can you fail the Acolyte rescue?
- You can die, and a build that cannot handle the teleporter event plus a boss wave will not reach the arena at all. Arriving without a healing item is the other way the attempt stalls, because the handover is what completes the unlock.
- Is the Acolyte unlocked by default?
- No. Of the two survivors Hallowed Concepts adds, Enforcer is available as soon as the expansion is enabled and the Acolyte is the unlockable one.
